Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica is the medical name for nerve pain caused by irritation and/or compression of the sciatic nerve connected to the nerve roots in the lumbar spine. This often leads to inflammation and chronic pain. However, the condition can be treated with chiropractic care at Circle Chiropractic Center, P.C. Our chiropractor, Dr. Christopher Frey, has provided residents of Fairfax, VA, with natural and effective sciatica treatment for many years.

What Causes Sciatic Nerve Irritation or Compression?

Research suggests that herniated discs are the most common cause of sciatica. The two sciatic nerves in the lower back spine extend past the buttocks, to the legs, and end in the feet. The ruptured disc may directly touch and irritate the nerve. In other cases, it leaks a jelly-like substance that inflames the nerve.

Other common causes of nerve compression include narrowing of the spinal canal, and forward slipping of one vertebra onto another. Deterioration of the tissues, facet joints, or discs in the lumbar spine can cause sciatica. Irritation by the sacroiliac joint at the bottom of the spine and spasms from the buttock muscles are also common causes of sciatic nerve pain.

Signs You May Have Sciatica

Common symptoms include a nagging, off-and-on to severe and debilitating pain that radiates along the path of the nerve to the leg. The pain typically occurs in one leg. Other symptoms include:

  • Numbness or tingling at the back of the leg
  • Weakness in the leg or foot
  • Change in posture may relieve or aggravate the pain
  • Pain may worsen with prolonged sitting or standing

Sciatica Treatment

Sciatica is a symptom of an underlying condition and may not resolve with time or medication. The problem causing irritation or pressure on the nerve needs to be addressed for effective pain relief. Our chiropractor, Dr. Christopher Frey, is trained to use a non-surgical spinal decompression technique to draw the herniated (slipped) disc back to its ideal position. This stops nerve irritation and reduces inflammation.

Spinal manipulation techniques can also be used to put the vertebrae back in proper alignment. At the same time, it lifts the pressure off the affected disc or nerve root. Chiropractic care promotes natural healing and improves nervous system function. Dr. Frey may also recommend special exercises, a customized diet, and lifestyle advice as part of a holistic approach to healing.
